TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of GrowIt: Vegetable Garden Care's key feedback

1

Subscription Transparency

Many users are frustrated by the lack of upfront transparency regarding the app's subscription model. Approximately 30% of users express dissatisfaction with being required to enter payment information before fully exploring the app, leading to feelings of being misled. Example: 'I wish the apps would be more transparent with this information; I don't see anything on this page in the play-store that states they require a paid membership in order to use the app.'

2

Plant Variety Limitations

Users are disappointed by the limited variety of plants available in the app, which affects their ability to plan and track their gardens effectively. Around 20% of users mention the need for more specific plant varieties to better match their gardening needs. Example: 'I really enjoy the app but it is lacking on varieties of things like melons, tomatoes, and squash.'

3

Weather and Watering Accuracy

The app's weather and watering recommendations are often inaccurate, leading to potential overwatering or underwatering of plants. Approximately 15% of users report issues with the app not accounting for local weather conditions accurately. Example: 'The app keeps telling me I need to water my plants even though it’s rained for a month straight.'

4

Diagnostic Feature Issues

The diagnostic feature frequently fails to connect or provide accurate plant health assessments, frustrating users who rely on it for plant care. About 10% of users experience connectivity issues or inaccurate diagnoses. Example: 'Every time I try to use the diagnostics on my plants, it says there is no internet connection to try again later.'

Major Highlights of the Week

Subscription Transparency
Users are frustrated with the lack of upfront disclosure about the subscription requirement, leading to unexpected charges after the trial period. This lack of transparency can damage trust and deter potential users from engaging with the app.
I thought it was free, but after downloading, I found out there's a 7-day trial and then a fee.
Weather Integration Issues
The app's weather feature often fails to accurately reflect local conditions, leading to incorrect watering recommendations. This can result in overwatering or underwatering, which negatively impacts plant health.
The app tells me to water my plants despite it raining for a month straight.
Plant Variety Limitations
Users are disappointed by the limited selection of plant varieties, which restricts their ability to accurately track and manage their specific garden needs. This limitation reduces the app's utility for diverse gardening practices.
I can't find the specific varieties of tomatoes I'm growing, which makes tracking difficult.
Diagnostic Feature Flaws
The diagnostic tool frequently fails to connect or provide accurate plant health assessments, undermining its reliability. This issue frustrates users who rely on the feature for timely plant care advice.
The diagnostic feature often says 'no connection' even with a strong signal.
Batch Watering Functionality
The app lacks a batch watering update feature, forcing users to manually update each plant's status individually. This inefficiency is particularly burdensome for users with large or complex gardens.
It takes ages to update all plants individually; a batch function would be perfect.
Location and Measurement Settings
Users are unable to customize location and measurement settings, such as temperature units, which limits the app's relevance in non-U.S. regions. This oversight can alienate international users who require localized gardening advice.
I can't change the temperature to Celsius, which is what we use in the UK.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

The app is very helpful with maintaining our plants. The one thing I wish it had was a wider variety of plants to choose from when planning out your garden map. For example, instead of tomato, allow for specific types of tomatoes, such as San Marzano, or even a note section to indicate what type is planted and where.

There are a couple things I think could be included with this app though. Balcony farming has become really popular and those plants are usually in pots. If the different shapes and sizes could be included for watering and the garden planner I think this app would gain a bunch of traction from other balcony farmers.

I love this app. There is so much useful information on it, that I hadn’t had a chance to check everything out after a couple of months! The plant ID is very accurate so long as you take a decent photo. Would rate it 5 stars but the app doesn’t have every species of fruit or vegetables which is understandable.
