TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of Crunchyroll's key feedback

1

Excessive Ads

Many users are frustrated with the overwhelming number of ads, which disrupts the viewing experience. Approximately 30% of users have mentioned this issue, indicating that the frequency and length of ads are excessive, making it difficult to enjoy the content without interruptions.

I get bombarded with 5-6 ads in a single break, making it hard to enjoy the anime.

2

Premium Content Restrictions

A significant number of users are dissatisfied with the amount of content locked behind a premium subscription. Around 25% of users feel that too many shows require a premium membership, limiting access to popular series and episodes.

I can't watch most of the anime I like without paying for premium, which is frustrating.

3

Technical Glitches

Users frequently report technical issues such as app crashes, audio desynchronization, and login problems. These glitches affect about 20% of users, leading to a subpar streaming experience and dissatisfaction with the app's reliability.

The app keeps crashing and the audio doesn't sync with the video, making it unwatchable.

4

Dub and Sub Availability

There is a notable demand for more dubbed content and better subtitle options. Approximately 15% of users express disappointment over the limited availability of English dubs and the quality of subtitles, which affects their viewing experience.

I wish there were more English dubs available, as some shows only have subtitles.

Major Highlights of the Week

Ad Overload
Excessive ads disrupt the viewing experience, with some users encountering up to 6 ads in a single break, making it difficult to enjoy content without interruptions. This ad saturation diminishes user satisfaction and could drive users to seek alternative platforms.
I watched one second of anime and then had to go through another 5 ads.
Dub/Sub Limitations
The app lacks comprehensive dubbed options, with many popular series only available in Japanese, frustrating users who prefer or require dubbed content. This limitation could lead to user attrition as they seek platforms with more language options.
I wish they could try to get all the anime’s to have a dub.
Account Issues
Users face persistent problems with account creation and subscription management, including invalid email errors and unresponsive subscription activation. These technical barriers hinder user onboarding and retention.
I can't create an account; it says my email is invalid.
Playback Problems
Frequent playback issues, such as audio desynchronization and app crashes, disrupt the viewing experience and frustrate paying subscribers. These technical glitches undermine the app's reliability and user trust.
Every few minutes I have to back out of the app and restart due to audio desynchronization.
Censorship Concerns
Users express dissatisfaction with perceived censorship of content, fearing it compromises the authenticity of the anime experience. This perception could damage the brand's reputation among its core audience.
I am starting to see a lot of censorship that I do not like.
Subscription Confusion
There is confusion and dissatisfaction regarding subscription benefits, with users feeling misled about the extent of premium content access. This misalignment between user expectations and service delivery could lead to cancellations.
I bought the subscription but it still denied me watching episodes.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

The Crunchyroll app on Apple TV 4K is okay overall, but there’s a major issue with on-screen text translations in dubbed shows. Most of the time, important Japanese text (signs, messages, etc.) isn’t translated into English—something that occasionally works on my Nvidia Shield but rarely on Apple TV. I reached out to customer service, and their response was frustrating. They asked me to go through multiple series and manually note every single timestamp where translations were missing, which seems like something their QA team should be doing, not paying subscribers. They refused to escalate the issue without that info. Pretty disappointing support for a major streaming platform.

I’d like to be able to listen to the English dub and, at the same time, have the option to add subtitles in another language, such as Spanish, if I wanted. You guys should make an update to improve the dubbing and subtitle system.

I paid with PayPal for years having no issues. But Crunchyroll did some kind of update and now they can’t process payment. They also won’t let me choose a different payment method besides putting my credit card on their website. Sad to say but I’m not sure I will resubscribe unless they fix this issue.
